A hydraulic floor jack raises a vehicle; it is not a support stand. Before using one, identify the jack model, the vehicle’s approved lifting and support points, and the equipment needed for the job. Check the equipment before positioning it
Read the vehicle and jack instructions first. Inspect the jack for damage, leaks, missing hardware and abnormal operation. A jack that will not lift, lowers unexpectedly or has a damaged frame needs assessment before use. Do not compensate by adding weight, adjusting a safety valve or pumping harder.
Match the jack to the actual lifting task
The jack’s own weight is not its lifting capacity. Compare its rated load, collapsed height, reach and maximum height with the approved lifting arrangement. “SUV,” “low profile” and a tonnage in a listing do not establish compatibility. Start with the capacity and fit checks.
Use approved points, not an arbitrary piece of metal
Do not clip the jack onto any visible seam or pinch weld. Some vehicles have reinforced pinch-weld points, while others specify different locations or contact tools. Locate the exact points in the vehicle instructions and check whether the saddle or an approved adapter is suitable. See how to find your car’s lifting points. Understand the release control before lifting
Identify the pump handle and release control from the jack manual. The release control must be in the specified lifting position before pumping; leaving it open is not a lifting instruction. Plan support and lowering in advance
Use a suitable hard, level working surface, the vehicle’s specified parking procedure and wheel restraints. Keep people clear of the lifting area. Transfer the raised vehicle to appropriately rated stands at its approved support points before working underneath. A creeper, a second person or a hydraulic valve does not replace secure support.
Lower only with the area clear and according to the jack and vehicle instructions. Open the release gradually to maintain control; never use a quick pressure release as a shortcut. If the equipment behaves unexpectedly, do not reach underneath to troubleshoot it.
